Dayton’s men were standing next to their horses, loot packed and ready. The walk to Dayton’s steed might have been less than twenty paces. Sage convinced herself she could do it without breaking down. She could be strong if she didn’t look anyone in the eye, but almost immediately she saw her mother, and all Sage’s resolve vanished into thin air. The tears were instant, and she pulled her hand away from her captor’s. “MOM!” Sage cried, and tried to race to her mother’s arms. Several of Dayton’s men rushed to barricade themselves between Sage and her family. The scene caused the Wolfe women, young and old, to sob. Other villagers stood further behind and cried softly, the happiness of earlier forgotten. “Let her say goodbye,” Dayton told his men, and they let Sage briefly reunite with her mother and sisters. For a few moments, they all stood in a collective embrace. “I’m so sorry,” Sage’s mother whispered. “I’m so so sorry, Sage. I’m a fool. I’m a damn fool.” Sage wanted to agree with her but didn’t want what could potentially be her final moments with her mother to be angry ones. Instead she replied, “take good care of them, Mom.” Her mother nodded, and then brought her oldest daughter even closer to her and hissed in her ear. “Someone will come get you Sage, I promise.” Sage stared at her mother, seeing for just a second the same knowing smile that had crossed her lips before Dayton arrived. “Who, Mother?” Sage urged in desperation. “Who?” But before Tehila Wolfe could answer, Dayton called the farewell to an end, and his men pulled her mother, Naomi, Nira, Eden, and little Ora away from Sage. Sage tried desperately to call to her mother one last time, for any indication of who would come to her aid, but it was too late. “It’s time,” Dayton said again. “Prolonging it will only make it worse.” Crying softly, she let him guide her to his tall black horse. Once she had her foot in the stirrup, Dayton helped her onto the saddle before he swung over behind her. The closeness of his body made Sage’s skin crawl. Dayton’s men mounted their own horses and final preparations were made. “Farewell Community, may you never forget this day. I certainly won’t,” Dayton called. “Remember that Sage changed all of our lives forever.” He spurred his horse and Sage’s body lurched forward as it took off like a comet. Sage watched as her home whipped by her, as the buildings grew distant. Just before the road bent, and Community vanished from sight, she saw a man with olive skin and black hair standing by the edge of the road. He seemed vaguely familiar somehow, though Sage was convinced she was so scared she was no longer thinking logically. As they passed, she made eye contact with him, his eyes were hazel. He looked at her solemnly before he took one of his fists and placed it over his heart. Sage’s eyes widened as she tried to process the gesture’s meaning, but when she looked over her shoulder, all she saw was the bend in the trail. Community and the man were out of sight.

Cooper’s home was on a corner lot and backed up to the forest, so he mainly entered and left through the back door so no one on the street would see him come or go.

Doing that now, he smiled as he sensed his adopted daughter close by. His heart swelled while at the same time worry put him on edge. Edwin had made it clear on more than one occasion that Hope was not to remain in the Pack. He saw her as either a weakness or a threat. Cooper didn’t know which. He didn’t know much of anything when it came his Alpha, mostly because Edwin was losing his mind.

The enforcers had followed him around since Cooper had taken the four-year-old orphan under his protection. Hope was what he’d named her, and the thought of her brought a smile to his lips. Having children was something he hadn’t really dwelled on. But when he’d first seen the curly blonde with the big, green eyes, he’d instantly wanted to protect her.

The double click sound from a dog-training clicker echoed from the living room. He’d given the clicker to Hope as a way to call him. She was a deaf mute, and from what he’d been able to uncover, which was very little, he believed she’d been born that way.

Entering the living room, he held in a laugh at the mess fanned out on the title floor around her. About a dozen or so coloring books lay open, circling her. Every crayon was out of the box.

Hope glanced at him, and a smile brightened her face then dulled as she scanned her mess. Frantically, she closed the books and gathered them to her. Cooper rushed to her, sat on the floor in front of her and grabbed her hands. When she lifted her big green eyes, his heart melted. With a tender smile, he brought her tiny hands to his mouth for a kiss then released them and signed, “It’s okay. Play.”

Neither of them had known sign language before they met, but they were learning it together with the help of Cooper’s sister, Celeste.

Hope smiled again and then darted her gaze over Cooper’s shoulder. He knew his sister was there by her scent. Turning partway, he noted Celeste’s frown, and her crossed arms. She most likely smelled the female from the neutral zone. Damn, why hadn’t he gotten her name?

Her scent had instantly driven him crazy, and his wolf paced inside, wanting to hunt her down and demand things he had no right to.

Ignoring his sister’s scowl, he grabbed a coloring book and stretched out on his belly next to Hope. His adopted daughter copied him, grabbed her own book, and began coloring.

“Who is she?” Celeste spoke in a soft, calm tone so as not to alarm Hope. That was how they handled most of their arguments since Hope had come into their lives. The little girl could pick up on strong emotions and loud noises through her wolf senses. Celeste said that noise has a vibration to it that those who are deaf, especially supernatural creatures, are highly sensitive to. Hope was frightened by everything. So they kept their conversations light in front of her.

When things got emotional, they took it outside, argued telepathically like most wolves could, or waited until she went to bed.

“She’s my mate.”

He heard Celeste blow out a breath of annoyance. “We have enough complications.”

White beams of moonlight splayed themselves across the walls of Patrick’s opulent marshmallow bedroom in his high class contemporary New York penthouse apartment, shining in through the floor to ceiling windows. It was four o'clock in the morning and I was wide awake. Jet lag had gotten the best of me and my internal time clock was still running on Paris time. Rolling to my side, I propped myself up on one elbow to admire Patrick snoozing away comfortably next to me, all naked and handsome. The heat of the summer graciously allowed me an unshrouded view of his hunky body. No need for covers in this bedroom, thank you Mr. Summer Heat.

As I laid there feeling all warm and right, my eyes trailed around the room, which was quite visible in the spotlight of the moon. Pausing at one of the matted photographs on the wall, I curiously cocked my head to the side. A huge smile spread across my face as it dawned on me, that among the black and white artwork that peppered the wall, one was of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. What a coincidence. I had never noticed it before. I had once read that when a person experiences a coincidence in their life, it’s God winking at them. It’s like knowing that you are in the right place at the right time and that's exactly how I felt in this moment laying next to Patrick. Sometimes the universe whispers to us, and we need to remind ourselves, not to forget to click the shutter. I looked over at him again and wished I had a camera to freeze this moment for eternity much like the photographs on the wall.

We are all looking for something, for someone, for anyone, until the right person comes along, as if sent on a moonbeam from heaven above, and we can see through ourselves and back again in the eyes of our true love. I smiled and nestled into the sheets, hoping the movement might stir him to wakefulness.

I loved the look of his skin, stretched tightly over a pack of muscles, calling for my touch. Last night had been incredible. He knew how to work magic on me and touch the right spot at the right time. Gazing at his hard body stretched out on the bed, his tan skin contrasting against the white sheets, I raked my teeth over my lower lip. I couldn’t resist any longer. Why was he sleeping and I couldn’t? I reached over and gingerly touched him on his bulging bicep, but he just rolled away from me onto his side. Apparently, jet lag had not affected his sleeping pattern as much as mine, since he had only been in Paris for a few days. I pulled my hand back, sighing with frustration as I rolled off my propped up arm onto my back, flopping my head against the pillow.

“Don’t be. I liked you watching.”
My nails dug into my knees as her hands moved down my throat. Her skin like satin—her touch, soft. She ran her fingertips over the top of my breasts.
“I would have asked you to join us, if you hadn’t run.” Her gaze caught mine again while she slid her hand inside my skin-tone bra. “Will you run now, or will you do what we both know you want to do?”

About the Author:

Elizabeth started life wanting to be an actress because she loved entertaining people. She enjoyed nothing more than being able to make people laugh and to help distract them from reality for a few hours.

She studied Musical Theatre in college, but during her second year, her mind started to overflow with story ideas, so she began writing plays. Slowly, over the following three years, she was writing more and more, channeling every ounce of her imagination into the written word.

“What is this place?”

More solar lights illuminated the path to their destination. Although hesitant, she didn’t resist when he led her to the rocky archway. The exquisite aroma of the jasmine flowers clustered along the walls of the entrance lingered about them.

“It’s for the exclusive use of villa guests so….”

“What?”

“Since the reception is still going, I don’t think we’ll be interrupted.”

“Oh,” a shiver of excitement ran through her. Another chance of getting caught.

“There are some wrought iron torches along the stone walls.” Yong patted his pocketless jacket. “No matches.”

“I don’t have anything,” Cindy stopped. She wouldn’t follow even him into the blackness ahead. “I left my bag in my room, we’ll have to go back, we can’t see inside.”

“Hey, it’s no problem, I got it.” Yong stood close to the torch and blew on the wick. The glow emanating from his pursed lips ignited the lamp.

A surge of amazement rushed through her. “Oh, right, the dragon thing. Gwen told me all about it.”

“Hope it doesn’t freak you out.” Yong walked to the next one and repeated his magic.

“Not at all, actually, the first time I saw it was the night Gwen lost it on her ex. Then, I was freaked out, but it was like she was in a trance, and her eyes were….”

“Glowing?”

“Yes!”

“Yeah, that’s when the anger takes over. It’s like your body goes on autopilot. So, you’re okay with this then?” He leaned in to light another one.

“The way tonight is going; it’s just one more amazing thing.”

Yong took her hand and they went deeper into the tunnel.

A surprising sensation filled her palm. “Hey, your skin is getting hot.”

“Part of the parahuman lighter trick, I’m afraid. It’ll go back to normal in a few minutes.”
