Review: Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs

Title: Moon Called
Series: Mercy Thompson #1
Author: Patricia Briggs

Book Description:

Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...

"Werewolves can be dangerous if you get in their way, but they'll leave you alone if you are careful. They are very good at hiding their natures from the human population, but I'm not human. I know them when I meet them, and they know me, too."

I loved this book, it reads really quick, for me, and is always a favorite. Mercy, is a coyote shifter, and while she was likable and kick ass she wasn't invincible and the author didn't try to portray her as so, this was one thing I really liked about the book. I have read a lot of books that try to portray women as "invincible", and not that I don't think women are strong, I am one, but shifter or not, there is some limitations that have to be set for it to be even remotely believable to me, yes, even though it is fiction.
Anyway, back on topic, Moon Called was a great start into the Mercedes Thompson series, and though it did kind of have a slow start that didn't take away from the book at all. I loved how we got a peek into the past with Samuel but also have huge thing for her neighbor Adam. I loved how the pack worked and the Marrok, Bran, I am curious to learn more about him.

I look forward to more Mercy, and would definitely recommend to anyone who loves a good paranormal book.

Review: The Laughing Corpse (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #2) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Title: The Laughing Corpse
Series: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #2
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton

Book Description:

The novels of New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton take readers into the dangerous life of Anita Blake, animator and vampire hunter; a woman as good at raising the dead as she is at slaying the undead. Now, a creature from beyond the grave is tearing a swath of murder through St. Louis. And Anita will learn that there are some secrets better left buried and some people better off dead...

My review:

In this second installment of the Anita Black, Vampire Hunter series Anita is offered a million dollars by a man named Harold Gaynor to raise a zombie. A zombie that just happens to be 283 years old, which means the only death 'big enough' would leave her committing human sacrifice.

This is only the beginning of Anita's trouble when a call from Detective Sargent Storr, head of the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team or R-I-P-T, brings her into a gruesome murder scene. Anita is on the retain and is often called in to help identify what monster may have done what. People are dying and Anita has to find out what did it and where it is before it strikes again. This brings her into contact with Dominga Salvador, the voodoo priest for the entire Midwest.

I really liked this second installment by Laurell K. Hamilton, this is my third reading of the book and I am still not put off by knowing how it will end. I think this book has something the first didn't maybe it was just we know more now after having read the first so there is as much info and more plot.

I have read that some people consider this book horror it does have some pretty violent scenes in it and is pretty detailed but I do not know if I would really consider it horror so, I guess that is a mater of opinion.

One thing I do wish was that we got a little more of Jean-Claude, I know the main point of the book is Anita, the series does have her name in it, but still who doesn't want a little more of him? Especially since all the drama going on between the two is quite interesting and makes one wonder who will come out the winner in the end.

I would recommend this book to all paranormal lovers.

Review: The Taming of the Thief by Heather Long

The Taming of the Thief
Heather Long

One Treasure…

Some would kill to know what Sophie Kingston knows. Rich and powerful people will do anything to possess the secret, but not even Sophie realizes how much danger she is in—or how far they will go to hunt her down and take it from her.  But when she sees a murder no one can prove, the threats to her life keep coming.

One Hunt…

Pietr Sauvage is neck deep in the hunt for The Fortunate Buddha when a lead draws him to New York and thrusts him into the life of art history specialist Sophie.  What began as a favor turns into a desperate need to protect the sexy curator from the dark web of deception threatening to pull her under.

Too Many Thieves…

Lost in the shadow of intrigue and danger, Sophie must learn to trust Pietr, a man with an agenda, a man she can’t help but desire, before the ruthless thieves steal their only chance.

Raising the stakes heightens the attraction…

My Review:

The Taming of the Thief is the second book in author Heather Long’s The Fortunate Buddha series.

In this second installment we meet Sophie Kingston and Pietr Sauvage.

Sophie is an art history specialist working in a museum when she witnesses a murder. Being lucky enough to escape the killers notice she reports the murder to the police—only for them have them tell her that there is nothing there and without a body or any evidence…well they send her on her way and leaver her wondering if she had not really just imagined it.

That is until an attempt on her life is made; luckily the sexy Pietr is there to save her. Though she and Pietr are not on the best of terms and she hardly knows the man after this they are pretty much inseparable.

Pietr has come to New York looking for the lost Fortunate Buddha and comes to Sophie for her expertise but finds more than he bargained when he first sees the lush woman and finds himself protecting her and vowing to find the man behind the attacks and stop him.

I really liked this book—it was just as good if not better than the only other book I have read by this author.

Sophie knows that Pietr has an agenda but he is also the only stable thing in her life right now, and neither can she (or Pietr) fight the desire that burns between them either. I do not know what I liked more about this book-the mystery or the relationship between out two characters.

As with the first novel I read by Heather Long not too long ago the author manages to keep the sexual tension and the air of potential ‘jump-you-and-rip-your-clothes-off’ between the main characters throughout the whole book while actually have very few sex scenes and a lot of plot.

This is my second book by Long and is also the second book that I have jumped in without reading the first book. I did not even know this book (or the first one I read by this author) was even in a series until I opened the review copy. Which I find odd but no matter! The point is that I would recommend reading the first book in this series first it could be read as a stand alone but it also gives away a good bit about the first book.

I was never confused or anything—this book is about two different main characters than the first book was (though from what I understand Pietr was in the first book, too). So ultimately while The Taming of the Thief could be read without the first book I would highly recommend picking up the first book before the second.

The last lock gave and Sophie leaned on the door and opened it. Her bag weighed hard on her shoulder and all she could think about was a shower or a bath and a good night's sleep. Then back to the museum to her archive and to making sense from chaos. Dr. Hinkley could come back from his sabbatical and it would turn out to just be too many episodes of her favorite crime shows infecting her with their gestalt.
She pushed inside, purse sliding down her arm and dropping on the floor. Hitting the lights with one hand, she shut the door with the other and snapped the locks into place, one at a time. It took her a moment to focus, to see the man sprawling in relaxed pose on her sofa, his ankles crossed, one over the other.
Dark hair tumbled over a ruggedly good-looking face of chiseled features under a growth of stubble. His eyes were soft amber, like fine liquor and his lips were full and even as they spread into a smile.
 Sophie gaped.
“Bonjour, cheri.” The lilting French rolling off his tongue sounded as sexy as it was unexpected.
She opened her mouth and screamed, scrambling for the door locks and just as she wrenched open the door, he leaned past her and pushed it closed.
“I'm sorry, Professor Kingston, I didn't mean to startle you.” The heat of his body burned into her as he pressed her against the door.
Sophie stared at him. The shooter’s French from the museum washed over her. But this man was taller.
 Much taller.
“What are you doing in my apartment?”
 “I need your help.”
“Breaking into my apartment is a bizarre way to ask for help.” How do I sound so very calm? Her heart beat against her ribs like a hummingbird desperate for escape.
“Oui.” Tall, dark and French had the grace to look abashed. “My apologies. I waited at the museum for a few hours, and then outside your apartment building. I admit, I got a little tired. I came inside to see if you'd gone out of town, but fortunately, here you are.”
Sophie's mouth fell open further. Her heart stuttered over his grin, but quickened at the sense of outrage.
“Are you going to let me go?”
“Are you still going to scream?”
 “I'm thinking about it.”
“Well then, I shall hold you here until you have considered the options. Oui?”
“My options?” Sophie's eyebrows climbed. Was this man for real? Outrage smothered fear. “My options? You broke into my apartment. You're holding me against my will. You just confessed to stalking me. And you want me to consider my options? Are you out of your mind?”
The bastard grinned. Grinned! A broad, toothy, flashing grin that sent shivers up her spine. Her stomach flipped over. He brushed so close the scent of his aftershave tickled her nostrils. She fought the urge to take a deeper inhale, to taste the flavor of the man on her tongue.
“I've been accused of worse, cheri. Fortunately for you, I am not insane. But I do need your help and I do need to talk to you without you screaming for help and putting us through a long night of uncomfortable questions.”
“I suppose you have a counter offer?” Had she gone completely insane that morning? Imagining a coworker felled by a bullet? A day of bad coffee and questioning at the police station? She was hungry. She was tired. Maybe that explained why she would entertain this lunacy.
“Of course. Dinner. Some wine. A conversation. After which, I go away and you get some sleep.” Her uninvited guest trailed a finger down her cheek, sending shivers radiating across her flesh. “And forgive me cheri, but you look very tired.”
“I've had an abysmal day. I am not in the mood for entertaining much less having a meal with someone I don't know and who broke into my apartment and is currently threatening me.”
 “I am not.”
“Yes. You are.” Sophie punctuated the words with a hard shove against his chest. To her surprise he stepped back, nimble as a cat and held his hands out wide.
It was her chance. She could slip out the door and make a run for it. If nothing else she could yell her lungs out. She knew all of her neighbors. Valorie across the hall with her five kids would call the police in a heartbeat.
 But Sophie didn't yell.
She didn't yank the door open.
 She didn't bolt.
“What's your name?” Sophie asked instead.
“Then we chat? Perhaps over wine?”
“No, then I check your references and perhaps we meet tomorrow for coffee.”
He laughed then; a long, inviting, warm chuckle that beckoned her to abandon caution for the sheer exhilaration of leaping.
“I am not sure what references you intend to check. Is there a database for cat burglars?”
 “Is that what you are?”
“An outdated term to be certain, but I rather doubt that you will find me listed under some typical B & E reference of a library database.” His too sexy mouth twitched. He enjoyed the banter.
Call me crazy, but so am I.
“Then maybe Interpol would be a better reference point.”
“You wound me little bird. Interpol is extremely low brow for someone of my caliber.”
“And I only have your word for that.” Sophie countered.
“True.” He stepped back, giving her more space and still, Sophie didn't make a run for it. Despite her better judgment, the Frenchman intrigued the hell out of her tired mind, arousing her curiosity. He aroused a lot more than her curiosity, but she ignored that traitorous thought.
Sophie studied the man standing in the middle of her living room. Surrounded by the muted, antique colors of soft golds and browns, he was a splash of color, vibrant, alive and very raw. The twinkle in his eyes teased her, dared her.
 “Why are you here?”
 “Existentially?”
“No. Physically. Here. My apartment. Why are you here?”
 “Honestly?”
“Call me quirky, but I think that's exactly what this situation calls for.”
His laughter washed over her. The corners of Sophie's mouth tugged wider. She loved the sound of his laughter and her smile spread wider at the sound of it.
“My name is Pietr Sauvage. I am here because I need your help.”

My Review:

Jacob’s Trail is the second installment of author Heather Long’s Forbidden Legacy series. I have not picked up book two in this series yet but I have to say that though I now want to read book one (Cassandra's Dilemma) I was never once confused as to what was going while reading this novel.

In Jacob’s Trial I assume we are picking up close to where the first book left off as the characters talk about how not much time has past since they met and everything plot wise started happening.

Cassandra Belle is a media consultant turned…something. She draws in other people’s magic, like her two handsome men (a surly wizard named Jacob and laid-back Fae named Helcyon) and she can use it to, as soon as she learns how of course which she seems pretty reluctant to do. Jacob and Helcyon are unsure really what she is, as there are no female Wizards and the Fae have long since (until recently ) been trapped in Underhill. They only thing the do agree on is that it s best if no one else finds out.

That plan is blown to heck though when a demand from the Wizard Council’s inquisitor general demands that Jacob bring her for trial in three days.

Having magic may just condemn Cassie to death if something is not figured out soon—but the inquisitor general isn’t the only one with a interest in getting Cassie, another portion on Wizards, the Fae and the Wizard who she used to call friend is out to get her as well.

All Cassie wants to do is be with her men and do her job. Loving both Jacob and Helcyon was easy but posed a problem until both men pledged themselves to her, agreeing to the three way relationship, when they realized she would not/could not choose. There is just one problem with their new relationship…

Wizards and Fae do not get along. Years (and years) ago the Wizards and Fae had a war which ended with the Fae being trapped and withering away to nothing in Underhill. Their species well on the way to extinction because they were not breeding much and their magic/self faded away, all of that changes when they are freed from Underhill. But, the Wizards are not happy about them being out—of course they themselves are a dwindling race as Wizards are born of a Fae and Human.

You literally cannot have the one without the other, but most (the majority) of Wizards do not really seem concerned about that, they just want the Fae gone.

In this book we mostly get the solidification of their relationship, as above the Fae and Wizards do not get along, so sharing Cassie has been hard on them both but more so on Jacob.

The one thing I do wonder and it was probably a big thing in book one but was not mentioned that I remember in this book: I am unsure how the Fae got out of Underhill, so again I assume Cassie was the cause or at least helped but don’t take my word on that, it was just the vibe I got from this book. I know for sure she is the one who pulled them into the media spotlight though because she is still working as a media consultant in this book.

Overall this book is fast paced with a plot that kept me intrigued—not to mention the two sexy men—throughout the book. It is by no means filled to the brim with erotic sex screens but Long gives a more than a few and the sexual undercurrent manages to stay constant between Cassie, Jacob and Helcyon through the whole book as if the clothes could come off at any moment.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Heather Long’s work and anyone looking for a good fantasy ménage novel. I do recommend picking up the first book in the series first though even though I did not have any problems with picking up the second book first it will probably give you a better overall understanding of both the characters and plot.

Her gaze dipped to the silken ropes in his hands. “What are those for?”
“Control.” He circled the bed, drawing the ties across his palms. “Put your hands up to the headboard.”
Her teeth dragged against her lower lip. He hardened at the action. His cock jerked as he recalled the feeling of her mouth wrapping around him, pulling him deep into her throat, and the greedy way she swallowed every drop of seed. Exhaling slowly, he reasserted his control. Her lip biting was her tell. He always knew that her mind worked through the possibilities when she worried that soft, lush lower lip.
He waited, drinking in the shift of her hips and the roll of her bottom against the bed. Excitement beat in her pulse, flooding her body with the fire he longed to bury himself into, stoking that furnace until it consumed them both. But she needed control, and here, in this bedroom, she would learn how to take that power by submitting to the need for it.
Lips pursing, Cassandra raised her arms and pushed her hands against the slats of his headboard. He allowed another smile, this one warm with approval. Moving swiftly, he wrapped the silken ties around her wrists before threading them through the slats. Firm and secure but not tight enough to be painful. Cassandra watched him wordlessly, the tempest of her desire banked against the curiosity he could sense shimmering the air around her.
But she said nothing, and he paused to slant his mouth across hers, a long, wet kiss that invited her tongue to duel. She murmured a groan against his mouth, and Helcyon dragged his lips away, containing the need to devour her.
She growled, and he slid his hands down her sides to pinch her round bottom, enjoying the buck of her hips. “Lesson number one, if you want something, you have to be able to reach for it.”
Her mouth opened, aggravation warring with desire for a foothold in her expression. She tugged her arms, but they remained bound to the headboard. Feathering his hand over her hip, he traced the fine line curving her abandon, barely brushing across the soft, autumn-kissed curls at the juncture of her thighs.
“If I am supposed to reach for it, why did you tie me up?” The words were husky with emotion.
He stroked his hand down her left thigh, exploring the contour of the muscle flexing beneath his caress. “You think your enemies will be fair with you. That they will give you quarter. But why should they?”
Sweeping his hand up the inside of her thigh, he pressed her legs apart, smiling at the dewy flesh and swollen clit. She pushed up against his hands, trying to lift her hips. Feeling how slick it was with need, he grazed his fingertips lightly across the scorching heat of her pussy, never quite touching the soft flesh.
He chuckled at the wordless snarl of demand, combing the curls of her pussy with his thumb, dipping it down to warm the air above her clit but not quite touching it. “Why should they concede to you anything you want if you can’t take it?”
Steeling himself against the throb of blood pulsing through his cock, he stretched out, slanting his body against hers and indulging himself in a long, slow rub along her naked, quivering flesh. Every muscle in her body clenched and his protested the denial, but he watched her fevered expression. Her lips twitched, opening and closing as though she couldn’t find the words.
Her nipples speared against his chest, their turgid points pebbled to such hardness that the rub of his shirt incited them. He nibbled a path along her upraised bicep, enjoying the spicy musk of her want perfuming the air. Bracing his feet he stroked the length of his cock against her pussy. His pants constricted against his cock and his balls drew up, the pain so close to the edge of bliss that it took every ounce of his control to keep him from sinking home into the sexy little furnace.
The whisper of fabric rasped against her and Cassandra thrashed, but he couldn’t quite reach her clit. The barrier of clothing prevented it, and he lavished his attention across her shoulders, circling her breasts and teasing the desperate nipples flushed dark red with need.
“Lesson number two.” The words clogged in his throat, but he pushed them out, fighting the urge to take one perfectly rosy nipple in his mouth to suckle. He longed to slide down her body and suck that hot little clit into his mouth until she came and he could lick her clean and begin again.
But he focused on the lesson at hand. “You must change the rules if you want to take control back.”
“How?” The wail of sound peaked. He could almost feel her heart slamming against her ribs. He turned his head against her, listening to the wild cadence kickboxing inside her chest.
“Remove the barriers you don’t want to be there…focus…take from me what you want.” Fisting his hands into the comforter, he ground himself against her pussy, his cock desperate to be free. Desire threatened to completely shred his control, but he shackled the lust. Cassandra needed him, and if he could walk through fire for her, he could suffer the brutal pinch of his balls’ impending explosion.

Review: Bed of the Dead by Louisa Bacio

Bed of the Dead
Author: Louisa Bacio

Pages: 10
Purchase: Amazon |

Bed of the Dead is a very short tale about a human woman named Chloe who longed for more kinky play and is now one of the brides of a vampire, though the whole coven seems to be able to sleep with her, I think. While she once longed for more she is now dissatisfied with the hard, cold bodies and longs for someone more warm and pliable—someone like Seth. A man who was capture by the vampires for his beauty, Chloe and Seth has a tryst together (often from the sound of it) but when Nick, the master of the house (I think), finds out he is not pleased….

I have to say that this was just way too short for me. It was not bad, and I know a lot of people have really enjoyed it but for me I just could not get into it that much. I was unsure on a few thinks (note my I thinks above) and mostly this was just because it was so short that it ended before it really began.

I would recommend it for anyone looking for a very short hot read. The author is a good writer and I will be looking out for more of her works, but again, this one was just too lacking on the plot even for a very short tale for me and left me with more questions than answers at the end.
