With Jack Goslin, Karl and Betty Rutherfurd, and the Stevens Sisters nothing is simple or slower after moving into the number one retirement community in the south. With the neighboring resort battling over the beach property our eccentric group of seniors avenge war on the uptight and controlling manager of the resort. And after CBC gives the green light for residents to have private golf carts, well things just get even crazier for Derrick St. Clair.

From the new exotic fitness instructor, to Violet’s secret winery, Jack’s pimped out golf cart, and a host of other new issues for the director, CBC continues to gain popularity as the most interesting retirement community in the south. If you are looking for a place to retire, settle down, or witness bizarre fiascos stop by Cedar Branch, who knows – you just might make it home!

Out Now—Unholy Alliance by Kathleen Rowland @rowlandkathleen #romance #suspense #giveaway

Unholy Alliance (2nd book in the Donahue Cousins series)

Book Description:

A decade ago, Tori Rourke, and her cousin, Vivienne, ran from the Irish mob after witnessing a brutal murder. Tori was framed by the mob, and while she served time in prison, she worried that the killer, Seamus McGinn, had kidnapped her missing cousin.

Attorney Grady D. Fletcher, defender of the wrongly condemned, appeals Tori’s case and wins her release. Now, going by Victoria Morningstar, she runs a food truck from a seedy waterfront neighborhood, hoping to find her cousin's kidnapper.

When Grady agrees to defend a new client, Samuel Peterson, who’s been accused of beating to death the wife of a noted professor, the evidence mounts. The professor is missing, as well as his laptop that contains data dangerous to national security.

And Seamus McGinn is back, and rumors of a massive annihilation is about to begin. As they race to assist the FBI, the bonds between Grady and Tori are about to be tested. It becomes clear Grady and Tori are falling fast for each other, but what to do about it is a different story. He’s a divorced dad who wants more time with his kid. She brings danger to his front door.

Grady has questions of his own; Is Vivienne at the center of the mob’s operation? How much will it cost Tori before she learns the truth? All Grady knows is the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.

Excerpt:

“Don’t let the anxiety of freedom consume you.”  Attorney Grady Donahue Fletcher clenched his teeth and rehearsed what he’d say to his client, Victoria Morningstar. He’d won her appeal and drove to pick her up at Gladstone Penitentiary. “At least you won’t be placed in solitary.” That was worse.
Six months earlier Grady had phoned a reporter at the Los Angeles Globe. "Drew Barker. Grady Fletcher here.”
“Ah, the lawyer. Calling about a tip?”
“I am. Here's something you can investigate. Tori Morningstar, did she murder Irene Brennan?"
"I wrote that story many years back," the journalist had said. “I assume you have new discoveries.”
"Fraud, illegal testimony. Do you want the story first?" A second passed. "Otherwise, I'll call the Orange County Guardian."
"Okay, okay. We want it."
Three days later Grady had a hand in writing the first article in Drew Barker’s column. "The public labeled Tori Morningstar as an undesirable. Not black and poor, but disfavored, accused, incarcerated, and wrongly condemned. Her cellphone has been recovered. Her call to 911 identified her voice and substantiated screams of the victim in the background. Could she have beaten someone while speaking to dispatch at the same time?"
The reporter had written the second article. "People who get their ideas about criminal lawyers from TV probably would be disappointed in Grady Fletcher. He lacks flash but stands up straight, his posture neither ramrod nor slouched. He doesn't smoke, doesn't wear thousand dollar suits. His voice is soft and low, one of his assets. He speaks truth with a voice inviting confidences."
As nice as that was, Grady’s stomach cramped over pressure and strain from Drew Barker’s final article with the headline, Tori Morningstar, Released Today. Picked up by the online service, Newser, KTLA, and CBS Los Angeles, they planned to broadcast his arrival to escort his client from Gladstone.
Tori’s decade-long prison sentence ended today but with a sobering fear over tomorrow.
When was a July morning this hot? Grady balanced her release papers on his lap as he rolled up one sleeve then the other while gripping the damp steering wheel. Sweat blossomed on his throbbing forehead, wrapped like a python’s grip. He adjusted the dial for the AC and embraced the challenge of helping another client get back on track. Embrace and conquer. Or at least sound like it.

Interview with Kathryn Long, author of A Bride, A Groom, and Happily Never After.

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello! So very glad to be here. And thank you for inviting me. J I’m a retired school teacher, and now, spend most of my days writing. I devour mystery novels and love chocolate, often indulging in both of those simultaneously. Lol. I recently became a grandparent and live the quiet life with my husband and pooch, Max. NCIS, The Catch, Big Band Theory, and Life in Pieces are a few of my favorite programs. I really miss Castle, though. Beach vacations are the best. Someday I’d love to visit the French Riviera, drink wine, and eat cheese.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

First I compose a rather jumbled, rambling synopsis of the story idea. Yeah, it’s really a mess, one I alone could decipher. Then, I take that and by some miracle, I organize the details into chapter summaries. Sometimes, I use tons of sticky notes, which help me keep my timeline organized, and plaster them all over my office. Again, a mess that makes total sense to me! Of course, all of this will be tweaked, adjusted, shuffled, torn apart as I write, until I’m satisfied that this is the very best I can do.

Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

I’d have to say plenty of romantic suspense writers made an impact, especially Mary Stewart. I wanted to write stories with that kind of suspense, romance, and mystery. Stories that take readers away to places they’d enjoy visiting, to meet those characters, maybe fall in love with them.

I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Do your homework. In other words, write that first book, then set it aside and write a second, maybe a third, before you decide to put it out there. However, you may want to read some books on writing beforehand. My faves include Stephen King’s ON WRITING and James Scott Bell’s series of books which focus on each of the elements of novels – plot, characters, narration, dialog, etc. When you decide to get your precious babies published, whether you choose to go directly to submitting to publishers or to find an agent, again, do your homework. Learn to write a query letter, research those you want to query, prepare well.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Lilly Millenovanovich and family are inspired by my mom and aunts. Being very ethnic – plenty of Serbian cooking and baking and lots of gatherings to celebrate and eat – gave me plenty of fodder to work with. The town of Barton is a close description of my hometown; the three aunts are somewhat similar to my mom’s sisters, though none of them are as risquĂ© as Fran. Jake reminds me of my brother the cop, and Lilly? She’s one of a kind!

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Currently, I’m working on acquiring an agent for my Con Artist Series, light crime capers with plenty of cons, heists, adventure, and a touch of mystery. Think THE HEIST SOCIETY or FOX AND O’HARE. Hopefully, things will happen soon.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

To all the readers, thank you! Sometimes, or should I say most times, writing is such a solitary thing that it’s easy to feel lonely and wonder if anyone really cares about the stories I create. But when I get a kind note or review from someone who enjoyed reading my work, letting me know what they felt, how it affected them, then it’s worth it. THAT, wonderful readers, is true validation of what I do.

About the Author

Kathryn Long’s passion is writing mysteries, creating the intricate details and weaving them together into the clues which the reader will enjoy collecting to solve the crime. Many of her works include Native American elements and hints of the paranormal. She loves a scary ghost story!

Her writing inspiration began with reading about Nancy Drew and the heroines of romantic suspense authors such as Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart. Her first creations were short stories meant to entertain anyone who’d listen or read. Playing the guitar led to song lyrics, which she insists taught her the rhythm and pace of writing prose.

Writing took a serious turn several years ago when she had her first book published. To date readers can find her self-published cozy Lilly M Mysteries, and her traditionally published work: paranormal mystery, Dying to Dream, and latest, a romantic suspense, A Deadly Deed Grows at online retailers and in bookstores.

When writing and the creative muse take a break, this author loves to travel, watch Castle, and of course, read mysteries. Oh, and there’s always an author event or two she will attend in order to – you got it – talk about mystery. Kathryn lives in the City of Green located in northeast Ohio with her husband and little pooch, Max.

Guest Post & #Giveaway: Isle of Savages by T. Briar

Eleven souls are shipwrecked on an island teeming with sub-human cannibals. Who will survive to tell the tale?

Please welcome author T. Briar to the blog today for a guest post about Heroes, Heroines, and Villains! :)

Hi, there. My name is T. Briar, the author of Isle of Savages. Thanks for taking the time to drop by and visit with me. I really appreciate it.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to Eric, Mia, and Keri, the hero and heroines in my new action suspense thriller novel. They’re each only seventeen years old and have the dubious honor of being the only scholarship kids on the ill-fated sailing trip. The rest of the students come from wealth and privilege.
As you can probably guess, from the outset of the trip, my charity cases were looked down upon by the silver spoons. Now they’ve all shipwrecked on an island teeming with sub-human cannibals in a survival of the fittest type situation. Yep, the trio will have to be cunning and courageous to survive the other students, the captain, first mate, and the savages.
Without a doubt, Eric was my favorite character to write. Just couldn’t help but admire how he always put Mia’s and Keri’s safety before his own in trying to protect them from the horrors they’re all facing. It doesn’t always work out for him or the girls, as you might imagine. But he always had their backs. No matter what.
Mia was interesting to write also. Although she usually deferred to Eric’s good judgement, sometimes she didn’t. And there’s this one particular time when she comes to regret it. Grievously. But still, she strives just as hard as Eric to make sure that all three of them make it off the island alive.
Keri is the sweet one. Fun, happy, carefree Keri, the one girl in all the world that thinks everything will eventually turn out all right. No matter what. Yep, this is exactly how Mia thinks of her best friend.
Except Keri secretly harbors doubts about their surviving, especially after she fails to be of any help to Mia at a time when her best friend needs her the most. Keri will most certainly seek to redeem herself for the lapse, but it could end up costing more than Eric and Mia are willing to pay.
Captain Warren and his first mate was especially cunning adversaries for the trio. How I hated them from the very beginning. They were just so despicable.
Unsurprisingly, it was the little savages that proved to be the most treacherous of all. Don’t know where I conjured them up from, but a sense of dread welled up within me from the moment they made their first appearance in the story.
No one was safe from them. That surprised me the most. As much as I’d come to care about Eric, Mia, and Keri, and fought hard in the writing to help them survive each new catastrophe, I simply didn’t know how the story was going to turn out.
Yes, as the writer, I knew how I wanted the story to end. But would it turn out like I envisioned, with Eric, Mia, and Keri getting off the island?
I wish I could tell you how it ends. But, if I did that, I would deny you the thrill of finding out on your own.
Anyway, here it is for you to peruse and decided for yourself if you want to step onto the Isle of Savages with my hero and heroines.
Thanks again for visiting with me today!

Excerpt:

Gregory continued forward, ever wary, nerves keyed up and getting more frazzled by the second. Another twist awaited up ahead. Approaching it slowly, he duplicated the method of taking a quick peek, except this time he never withdrew his head, was instead, stunned into staring.
Tanya sat on the side of the trail with her arms wrapped around her drawn up legs, chin resting on her knees, long blonde hair hanging in tangles about her face. At some point, she’d lost all of her clothes and was completely covered in grim. Tear stains cut rivulets through the dirty smudges on her cheeks.
Gregory stepped forward and knelt in front of her. He mustered a grim smile at her ragged condition. “Tanya. Are you all right?”
At the sound of his voice, she twisted her head to look up at him with a vacant, lost expression. Slowly, her brows knitted like she was having trouble recognizing him.
“Tanya. It’s me. Gregory. Don’t you remember me?” Every nerve ending Gregory possessed pulsed with caution.
She blinked her glassy, watery green eyes once. Two lone tears spilled down her cheeks.
Alarmed at her despondency and a little irritated, Gregory placed the shotgun on the ground to grasp her by the shoulders and shake her roughly. “Tanya! Answer me! What happened to you? Where are your clothes?”
Tanya’s slack expression became more alert. She squinted, eyes flickering with recognition. She mumbled, “Gregory? Is that really you?”
“Yeah,” he answered. “It’s really me.”
“I’m so glad. Please kill me before you kill yourself. Please grant me this one last favor. I beg you. If we had time, I’d make it worth your while.”
Shocked by her words, he demanded, “What are you talking about? Tell me what happened to you?”
“They stripped me and brought me here. I tried to outrun them but they’re really fast. And…” she released her legs to let them flop open and expose her hairless slit as she lifted her chin to give a futile tug at the braided rawhide rope encircling her neck, “I can’t get this off. The other end is tied to a sapling over there.” She waved vaguely toward somewhere behind her in the dense vegetation.
The hair on Gregory’s arms immediately stood at attention. He snatched up the shotgun to stare Tanya directly in the eyes. “Who tied you up? And why did they leave you here? Tell me right now!”

Tanya lifted a shaking hand as terror filled her eyes. She pointed over his shoulder. “They did. Please kill me before they get to us. Hurry!”

Always striving for pulse-pounding action, sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense, and hair-raising thrills, T. Briar’s mainstream thriller writing places courageous heroes and heroines in the fight of their lives against the elements, hostile surroundings, morally bankrupt villains, and any other obstacles T. can think of.

Some will even die badly. That’s just the way it is when fighting for survival under perilous conditions. The only question is: Will it be the heroes and heroines, or the villains?

T. Briar’s target audience is New Adults who boldly step up to meet life’s challenges with the confidence of youth urging them on.

Hard Work Will Pay Off Later. Laziness Pays Off Now.

Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she's probably the last witch in the world who you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hallowed Order of Magical Enlightenment. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order's noses. It doesn't exactly help that she's been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy's concerned, he's a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work. And if he makes her go to the gym again, she's definitely going to turn him into a frog.

Excerpt & #Giveaway: The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting by Deborah Wilde

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting
by Deborah Wilde

GENRE: Urban Fantasy Romance

BLURB:

50% boobs. 50% sarcasm. 100% new breed of hunter.

After a bumpy start as the only female demon hunter in the top secret Brotherhood of David, Nava Katz heads to Prague for her first undercover mission: unmasking a demon movie star. She'd be all kinds of thrilled if it weren't for the fact that her fellow hunter-with-benefits, Rohan Mitra, has reclaimed his rock star status and assigned Nava the role of groupie.

Rejecting her "be a good girl and follow orders" directive, Nava unleashes an alter ego guaranteed to hook their celebrity target and drive Rohan crazy. No downside-until she finds herself up against Rohan's past, the Brotherhood's antiquated thinking, and her own identity issues, turning her personal life into a bomb that could blow up the entire operation.

Sparkly and deadly; it's a plan.

Excerpt:

Looping my fingers into his belt, I jerked his hips to mine. Rohan’s breath caught and when I brushed my lips over the shell curves of his ear, his whole body went tense. “Prove you’re worth it, baby.” Then I pushed him away, stalking off without a look back, mostly sure that he followed.

The second we got inside the empty elevator, Rohan shoved me up against the wall. I groped for the third floor button, leaning into him. He ran his hands feverishly over my body, hot tingles shivering through my breasts like a sexed-up call and answer. The focused hunger in his expression had me craving more, except my rapid breathing wasn’t all from arousal.

Given the barely banked rage evident in the tense bunch of Rohan’s shoulders, the feeling was mutual. Hopefully, he’d show no mercy in orgasm form and not body count, though I couldn’t promise the same right now.

I bit his earlobe, wanting to hurt him.

Rohan shot me a cavalier smile in response. Holy crap. My knees buckled.

The sprint to my room was a blur.

The second the door slammed shut behind us, Rohan edged his face in close to mine, his palm ghosting my cheek in the barest caress that sent slivery shimmers tumbling through me.

I raised my fingers to my mouth, not realizing what I’d done or that I ran them over my lips until Rohan tracked the movement, his eyes glittering dangerously.

His tongue flicked out, wetting his lower lip. He swayed in toward me and–

“No.” Taking his hands in mine, I forced them behind me. Forced him to hold me there, his rings biting into my skin. Forced him to make a decision; play by my rules or go.

Interview: Urban Wolf: Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone &Linda Thomas-Sundstrom #giveaway

URBAN WOLF Anthology: A brief interview with the authors Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Linda, how do your characters meet in Wolf in the City?

They meet on a dark back street in Los Angeles where even cops and gangs fear to tread, and are surprised as heck by seeing another "being" there.

Your characters actually come from different paranormal species.
Explain!

The wolf in this city (Jared ) is a sexy werewolf. The female he meets (Kit) is a feisty young vampire. As a most unlikely pairing, they might have to join forces and exchange some body fluids in order to see if bridging the "species" gap is in any way a viable option. Really though . . . who can better understand the problems an "Other" faces than someone who is also "Other"?

Is this a love at first sight love story or more of a slow burn?

Weres and vamps have long been enemies . . . so the relationship that unfolds burns slowly, but fiercely.

Which do you prefer writing—antiheroes or straight up heroes?

My characters, whether wolf or immortal, all have an innate sense of justice and are on a mission to help to right some of the supernatural world's wrongs. So though the main character Weres, vampires, and immortals in my books might be anti-heroes according to human society they try to blend in with, they are ultimately dangerous good guys.

Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone

Jillian, how did your characters meet in Wolf, Interrupted?

There’s been a lethal mauling in one of London’s Underground tube stations. Following up on a routine police report, Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant questions a startlingly attractive young woman who seems to know more than she lets on.

We’re curious why you titled your novella Wolf, Interrupted. Explain!

Both the hero and heroine in this novella have put their wolf on hold. After his brother betrayed him, Abelseth Durant became a lone wolf and walked away from his pack. Now he has returned to London and is working a case that almost certainly involves the wolfen underworld. Fearful of her she-wolf, Elle Hathaway has tamed the wilder side of herself by taking a lycanthrope suppressant. Now her supplier is dead and a handsome, but rather bothersome detective is sniffing around asking questions.

Is this a love at first sight love story or more of a slow burn?

Both! Never in her life has Elle felt such a fierce attraction to any man. She blames it on the fact that the suppressant is wearing off. Abelseth Durant finds it hard to get the lovely, mysterious young woman out of his head, and he’s almost positive she’s pure uninitiated wolfen—let the sparks and the fur fly!

Just how heroic is your hero or heroine? Or are they antiheroes?

Even though Elle is a reluctant wolf she’s less fearful that she realizes and her bravery is soon put to the test. Abelseth Durant has the kind of strength of heart a woman wants in her hero—he’s a wolf prince who never has to remind himself to man up. Plus, he’s deadly sexy!

Then one night, deep in the tunnels of the Underground, her life changes forever.

Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant is investigating the lethal mauling of an unknown victim in the Covent Garden tube station, and Ms. Elle Hathaway is a person of interest. Shaken out of blissful denial, Elle teams up with the handsome inspector to evade the renegade pack. But as her situation grows dire, Abelseth knows the only way he can truly protect the strong-willed beauty is to convince her to shift and claim her as his mate. There’s just one little problem with his plan—the reluctant Ms. Hathaway.

Excerpt Wolf, Interrupted by Jillian Stone:

Detective Inspector Durant was a hottie and he knew it. What remained in his favor, she supposed, was that he didn’t seem to pay much attention to his looks, hence the unkemptness, nor did he appear overly impressed with himself.
He sat quietly in front of her, consulting his smartphone.
“Looks like New Scotland Yard has gone paperless. Rather high tech of them, wouldn’t you say?”
“I thought we might start with your police report. You can confirm, make corrections, elaborate—whatever comes to mind.” He glanced up at her. “If you need clarification, feel free to ask me anything.”

Elle immediately thought of two good questions: Have a girlfriend? Looking for one?

Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Deep in the heart of L.A., in an area that cops and gangs fear, lone wolf Jared James stands guard, hoping to keep others from suffering a similar fate to the one he has endured. He is on a mission to find the monster that made him what he is. Meeting Kit, a feisty vampire with a mission of her own, will either help or hinder his chances to accomplish that goal . . .  but could possibly bridge the divide between two species, and make the long nights much more interesting.
