Kenderson’s Top 10 Favorite Books & Why
Renae’s 5:
1. Suzanne
Brockmann’s Troubleshooters Series
This is one of my favorite series because it has my ultimate
book boyfriend, Sam Starrett. You meet Sam in the second book (there is brief
mention of him in the first book), and he doesn’t get his story until book six.
It’s a long wait but totally worth it. I love this series because it has
multiple POVs and you really get to know the characters and get in their heads.
For example, like I said you meet Sam in book two. You get to be in Sam’s POV
and get to see what he is thinking. By the time you get to his book, you feel
like you really know him. Then to top it all off, this series is about Navy
SEALs. Hot, sexy, tough SEALs. I just love how Suzanne writes them. Plus, I
have heard her talk about how much research she has done on the SEALs and she
started her series years ago. She doesn’t write about them because they are
popular. She writes about them because she is genuinely interested in the Navy
SEALs, and her passion for them shows in her work. Book six is my favorite,
obviously, because it’s about my favorite book boyfriend.
2. J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood Series
I always think that J.R. Ward is the paranormal version of
Suzanne Brockmann, because like Suzanne, J.R. writes in multiple POVs too.
Then, to top it all off, she writes about sexy, badass vampires. And one of my
favorite things is that her vampires are alive. They are born and can have
children. They aren’t undead and they don’t live forever. Book three is my favorite. I love Zsadist
story and he’s my favorite vampire.
3. Mr. Perfect by
Linda Howard
I have to say this book because this was the very first
romance novel I read. I have always been a big reader. In middle school, I was
a huge Stephen King fan. But it wasn’t until I went to college that I read my
first romance. Lara, my co-author, lent me Mr.
Perfect and I guess you could say the rest is history. I had no idea books
could be written with sex in them. I was hooked. If I remember correctly, I
went and bought every Linda Howard book I could find and devoured them. Now,
that’s all I pretty much read.
4. Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Chicago Stars Series
After reading all of Linda Howard’s books I had to go and
search of new authors. This was back before Facebook and Facebook groups where
you could just ask people for suggestions. I remember doing a search online to
find other authors like Linda Howard. Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ name came up.
Now, she does not write like Linda Howard, but I fell in love with her books
nonetheless. These were my first contemporary romance books (before they had
all been romantic suspense) and my first sports books. I have read this series
multiple times and Susan always makes me laugh. My favorite book is book three
and I’ve read that one the most. Cal is still one of my book boyfriends to this
day.
5. Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chick Series
While I have so many books that I love, I have to include
this series because this is a series by and indie author. Not only do I love
Kristen Ashley’s books, but they showed me that you don’t need to be
traditionally published for readers to like your books. This series is fun and
Kristen has her own style of writing. Book five is my favorite, and Luke is
definitely on my book boyfriend list.
Lara’s 5:
1.
Kristen Ashley – Rock Chick Regret
I love Kristen Ashley’s books because she writes a hot hero
and fun characters. This particular book is my favorite because I love how
Sadie has all of these different parts of her personality and can’t figure out
who the “real Sadie” is. It just makes her so real. Who doesn’t have all these
quirky parts of their personality that don’t always fit together perfectly but
make you 100% you? And of course I love all the Hot Bunch and Rock Chicks being
involved in the story while Sadie and Hector overcome her trauma.
2.
Linda Howard – Dream Man
Love, love, love Linda Howard. Picking a favorite is hard. But
this one actually made me check behind doors and in closets and behind shower
curtains. And it still freaks me out sometimes. Plus having super steamy hot
sex scenes and an alpha badass hero. The psychic aspect makes it fun to see
skeptics become believers as Marlie becomes the only one who really stands a
chance against this murderer. I just love how Linda blends the hot romance with
the suspense. Perfection.
3.
MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead Series
My favorite is hard to choose, but I would have to go with the
first book, Undead and Unwed. I love
Betsy and Sinclair. Betsy is just hilarious. She doesn’t take herself seriously
and understands her “shortcomings” that make her so human. Then she becomes
Queen of the Vampires but keeps her human foibles. Girlfriend won’t let a
little thing like waking up dead mess with living her life. So much fun to read
when most other vampire series have stuffy vamps like Sinclair. ;-) While I
love the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward, I couldn’t copy Renae’s
answer. And this vampire series is nice when you’re looking for a laugh instead
of a serious vampire battle.
The Mane Squeeze is my favorite of this
series, but I love them all. The characters are sexy! The sex scenes are super
hot! But everything comes together and is really fun, too. Lock and Gwen are my
favorite pair because Lock is such a sweetie.
He just wants to go about his day and avoid drama. So of course he falls
for Gwen. Flashy nails and full of attitude. The combination just makes me sigh
with joy. The rest of the stories, especially Blayne’s story, are excellent. I
don’t know why I love Lock so much when my second favorite story is Blayne and
Bo. Bo is the polar opposite (no pun intended) of Lock, but I love both
stories. That is the true sign of an excellent series. The characters aren’t
carbon copies of each other and you still manage to love them all.
5.
Julie Ann Walker’s Black Knights Inc Series
I love Navy SEALs books because Renae introduced me to Suzanne
Brockmann. But I couldn’t copy her
answer. I read Julie Ann Walker’s Deep Six Series and wanted more. This led me
to her Black Knights Inc Series. This
group of men/heroes are from different walks of life and work/ride motorcycles.
Yum! What I think is one of my love/hate parts of this series is that Julie
isn’t afraid to kill off a character. It reminds me of the Walking Dead or Game
of Thrones. You can’t guarantee that your character is going to be safe. It’s a
great way to keep the books realistic. But the part of me that reads romance
novels for the HEA is constantly on edge when reading these. “What if she
doesn’t deliver an HEA for the main couple?! Whew, I dodged a bullet. But wait!
I liked that lady! Why did she have to die?! Is she going to save him?!?!” It’s
an emotional rollercoaster of sexy heroes. The first book has a heart-wrenching
storyline about a dead team mate. I can’t say more but Julie Ann Walker makes
your heart break with this storyline. And, while I tend to avoid sad stories, she
weaves in the romance and suspense so well that I had to read the rest of the
series that is available.

About the Author
R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading and in third grade wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then she knew she wanted to write her own.
When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own.
They both live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day and a sexy author by night. You can find them at http://www.rlkenderson.com, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads. Or you can email them at rlkenderson@rlkenderson.com. They always love hearing from their readers.
