About the Author:
Jordan Castillo Price grew up in Western New York, born in 1968 she spent her formative drinking years in inner city Chicago, and is now writing paranormal thrillers from her home in small-town rural Wisconsin. Jordan graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA). She also started JCP Books in 2008 so she could have creative control over her stories, from the content of the book to the cover. In 2010 she added Josh Lanyon and Sean Kennedy to her lineup. Up until last year she worked as a graphic designer until she quit to focus on her publishing business.
Jordan is best known as the author of the PsyCop series, an unfolding tale of paranormal mystery and suspense starring Victor Bayne, a gay medium who's plagued by ghostly visitations. Visit JCPbooks.com to glimpse Chicago beyond the veil.
Question and Answer:
-When did you write your first book and how old were you?
I wrote my first totally unpublishable novel at 31, then I proceeded to figure out how to write. I stumbled upon fanfiction and wrote that for a few years, published my first short story in a print anthology when I was 36, and started my own publishing company when I was 40.
-How did you start writing?
I was an avid reader, so when I got my first computer, I immediately used it to begin writing a novel.
-What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
Read analytically and try to determine why the things you like work for you. Read plenty of books and magazines on writing. Join websites where new writers trade critiques, or join a local writing group, and learn to quell the urge to be defensive when your crit partners tell you what needs work in your stories. Submit your work selectively only to publishers who are appropriate for your story.
-What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I usually work from 7-7 every day, though the day is broken up with tasks other than just pure writing, such as accounting, correspondence, research, typesetting, etc.
-How did you name your characters?
Unless the character names magically "come to me," I look at baby name lists and try to ensure the characters in the story don't sound too similar to each other (their names don't start with the same letter, and they have a different number of syllables). There are also some good random name generators at seventhsanctum.com
